Quarter Review
?During the 3rd quarter of 2017 the prices of emerging market bonds rose. The spread between emerging market government bonds and United States Treasuries dropped by 23 bps to 287 bps. The 10-year US Treasury bond yield-to-maturity rose 3 bps to 2.33%. Geopolitical risk remained increased during the 3rd quarter, due to escalating tensions between the US and North Korea. The Federal Reserve (Fed) kept its target fed funds rate unchaged at 1.25% and confirmed the plan of gradual balance sheet reduction at the meeting of October, announcing the end of bonds reinvestment policy. The discussions about the US tax reform in combination with the upcoming announcement of Mrs. Yellen succession were in the focus of investment interest during this quarter. The capital inflows in emerging markets are close to historical highs. At the same time, prospects for the global economy have improved mainly in Europe, but also in the emerging markets. Higher commodities prices have provided support to the bonds’ prices of oil-producing countries, which outperformed the rest of the emerging countries. The improved global macroeconomic environment and the low government bond yields provided support to the emerging market bond prices. The fund’s quarterly return was 0.96%, while the benchmark’s return was 2.62%.
