Quarter Review
During the fourth quarter, BRIC equity markets gained on improved sentiment. Investment demand was particularly strong for Asian equities due to strong regional economic growth and better than expected corporate earnings. Additionally, stock markets in India were positively affected by the authorities’ decision to recapitalize public sector banks. In Brazil, the decline in the exchange rate as well as worries over delays in economic reforms led to negative returns. Russian equities improved following the rise in the oil price and further monetary policy easing. The benchmark MSCI BRIC index advanced during the quarter by +4.78% in euro terms. Equity markets in China gained +5.99% in euro terms, India increased by +9.98%, Russian equities returned +1.62% and Brazilian equities declined by -3.45%. The portfolio of funds investing in China and the BRIC region positively contributed to comparative returns while the portfolio of funds investing in Indian equities and Russia underperformed. During the quarter, investment exposure fluctuated between 97% - 97.5%.
